Chapter Eighteen

When Kit rolled out of bed the next day, her body let her know the ziplining had required muscles she’d apparently ignored for too long. After surviving such an adventure-filled Wednesday, she appreciated their plans to relax today. It would give her a chance to recover before they attempted the Road to Hana.

She’d done a little snorkeling close to shore yesterday, as Nancy Drew had suggested, and avoided any snorkeling-related mishaps, but poor Lynette gained a nasty scrape down her stomach when a rogue wave pulled her across an outcropping of coral in shallow water. The stubborn woman raised her middle finger to a star-studded sky, declaring to the universe and anyone listening that she refused to heed conventional opinions that reserved bikinis for younger women, and they’d all laughed at her. She probably would have escaped the coral without injury if her suit covered her stomach, but that wasn’t going to change her mind. Lynette would wear whatever she damn well pleased, and she’d sell attractive swimsuits for women over forty through her company, too. As an entrepreneur, lines were often blurred between her real life and her business.

Lynette’s declaration last night reminded Kit of her visit with the real-but-not-real Nancy Drew. After she’d shared what she could remember with the rest of the Kaleidoscope Girls, as they’d relaxed around the lighted pool, the modern mystery novel next to her bedside felt lacking. She might have to scour some used bookstores when she got home. It would be fun to revisit some of her favorite titles from the old Nancy Drew series, like The Secret of the Old Clock or The Sign of the Twisted Candles. Or maybe Hazel had even kept the box of Nancy Drew books she’d given Kit years ago. After discovering the tubs of old childhood memories in Hazel’s basement, Kit supposed the house might contain more mysteries than she would have guessed.

The day spent relaxing around the pool at their rented home was exactly what she’d needed.
